It's underway! Toronto's Roncesvalles is under reconstruction. Roncesvalles Renewed is a group of residents, business owners, politicians, city planners, and transportation officials working together.
Our key priority is to ensure that plans include the condition necessary for trees to flourish. We are also working to create better sidewalks, beautiful public spaces. And please buy and dine locally while the street is being torn up, to show your support for a great street and help our businesses get through the Dig.

The Public Realm Section of Toronto's giant Transportation Division is now managing the design process for our new Roncesvalles, a task that until now was assigned to the Economic Development office. The change, along with comes project design leader Elyse Parker, is welcome news for the future of the trees and pedestrian spaces on our Avenue.
The office, a relatively new section within the Transportation Division, as well as Ms. Parker, are highly regarded by Spacing, perhaps Toronto's leading authority on public spaces. Ms. Parker's past efforts suggest her interests align well with those of Roncesvalles Renewed, including, according to Spacing contributor Dylan Reid, as "someone with proven experience in improving pedestrian spaces in the city." Among her list of accomplishments is Toronto’s Boulevard Transformation Program, which seeks to “replace hard, impermeable concrete in neighbourhoods with greened sustainable boulevards.”
Along with the change of design leadership for the project, the Roncesvalles Renewed effort to ensure a canopy of healthy trees got a boost as Councillor Gord Perks informed neighbourhood leaders that he has identified a source of funding within Toronto's budget now that federal funding has been confirmed for other projects. Unfortunately, we won't have a fully integrated tree canopy as there's apparently just too much stuff already underneath our street to make way for the full amount of soil trenches we need.
But it's certainly good news that we're on our way to a better Roncesvalles. And the public design meeting tomorrow should go a long way to help define the way the street will look - in the details.
