Toronto's Roncesvalles is into the second phase of its reconstruction. Roncesvalles Renewed is a group of residents, business owners, politicians, city planners, and transportation officials working together.

Our key priority was to ensure that plans include the conditions necessary for trees to flourish. We also planned for better sidewalks and improved public spaces to create an avenue that all would enjoy. These plans are now undersay. To show your support for a great street and to help our businesses get through this final phase, please buy and dine locally.

Mark Ellwood organized and led our tour of Roncesvalles Ave, and he came armed with maps, design plans and a keen sense of how to navigate the street, people and multitude of ideas and opinions on offer. As we wandered from south to north we discussed several key points, including:

  • Transit "bump outs" and the associated shelters
  • Non-transit "bump outs" to narrow the street, thus shortening the street crossing distance
  • Trees (of course!)
  • Street Furniture
  • Lighting
  • Loading issues
  • Crosswalks, and their ideal positioning to accommodate bump outs
  • Other issues and ideas as they came up

As I write this the notes are being transcribed and then compiled so we can pull out what our key recommendations will be at the design meeting hosted by Gord Perks later this month. But a few things became clear:

  • The group wanted non-transit bump outs wherever possible to make it easier to cross the street
  • Sometimes we wanted to move a crosswalk to the other side of an intersection, allowing right turns from the right land AND shorter crossing distances for pedestrians
  • Moving transit shelters as close to the streetcar as possible, without impeding the bike lane
  • Bathrooms at the north, south and middle points are a good idea

I would encourage everybody who attended to add their thoughts to the comments, or in the block by block discussions. Below is a slideshow of photos from the walk with some of the areas of discussion pictured, as well as the many community members who came out to join the walk.
