South Gateway

We now have an opportunity to reclaim what was once a great intersection to a wonderful part of the city by creating a gateway to Roncesvalles where Queen and King Streets West meet the Queensway. Some ideas that have surfaced include the means to calm traffic by using trees, greening the triangular space, and signifying the entrance to Roncesvalles by removing illegal billboards, as well as saving the historical Edgewater sign

Recently it was suggested that the TTC could relocate the traffic island where passengers board the eastbound Queen streetcar. Passengers trying to catch the Queen streetcar are forced to cross several lanes of traffic, making it an uncomfortable and unsafe place to board a streetcar.  By relocating the island to the east side of the intersection (on the southwest corner), drivers could turn left onto Roncesvalles, thus reducing through-traffic in the residential neighbourhoods west of Roncesvalles.

There should be a new arrangement for vehicles going south on King. The existing lane encourages drivers to move at high speed from the Queensway onto King.   We'd like to see that lane replaced with a clear right-hand turn. This would calm traffic, while expanding pedestrian space on the southwest corner.  It would also make it possible to create a proper pedestrian crossing, as proposed in the Western Waterfront plan. Other ways to calm traffic: introduce a bike lane or plant trees on the south side of the Queensway, west of the intersection.

Let's hear some more ideas around this.
